Does slow travel actually reduce your carbon footprint?

The slow travel movement makes an environmental claim that its own evidence does not fully support. The climate counts kilometers, not philosophies.

Anna Whitfield took a sabbatical year and spent it traveling slowly. She did not fly once. She crossed Europe by train, spent three months on a narrowboat in England, took a ferry to Morocco, and drove a converted van across Spain and Portugal. At the end of the year she calculated her carbon footprint carefully. It was not low. It was, by her own account, roughly comparable to what it would have been if she had flown to two long-haul destinations and stayed for two weeks each time.

She was not doing the slow travel wrong. She was doing the accounting right.

The climate counts kilometers, not philosophies. The slow travel movement has spent a decade building a case for lower-intensity travel. The case for lower-impact travel is more specific — and more demanding — than the movement generally admits.

THE COMMON ASSUMPTION

The common assumption is that slow travel is sustainable travel. Travel by train rather than plane. Stay longer. Move less. The slow traveler is, in the popular imagining, the responsible traveler. The assumption is widely held, frequently repeated, and — in its strongest form — correct. In its common form, it is incomplete.

The incompleteness matters because it allows the philosophy to function as permission rather than constraint. A traveler who identifies as a slow traveler has committed to a mode and a pace. What the evidence requires is a commitment to a total. These are not the same thing, and the gap between them is where most slow travel carbon calculations go wrong.

THE MODE ARGUMENT IS CORRECT

On mode of transport, the case for trains over planes is robust. A journey from London to Paris by train produces approximately 22 kilograms of CO2. The same journey by plane produces approximately 244 kilograms — eleven times more. The Eurostar achieves approximately 6 grams of CO2 equivalent per passenger kilometer, compared to 273 grams for a UK domestic flight. Trains produce between 7 and 40 times fewer emissions than aircraft depending on route and electricity source.

Emissions released at high altitude cause between 1.27 and 2.5 times more warming than ground-level CO2, a phenomenon known as radiative forcing — meaning the climate impact of flying is significantly higher than its direct carbon figure suggests. France’s predominantly nuclear-powered rail network achieves some of the lowest per-passenger emissions of any transport system in the world. On all of these measures, the slow travel mode preference is defensible, well-evidenced, and worth making.

The problem is not the mode argument. The problem is what happens when the mode argument is treated as sufficient — when choosing the train becomes the end of the calculation rather than the beginning of it.

THE FREQUENCY PROBLEM

A University of Leeds study published in Nature Energy in July 2024 examined the relationship between travel distance, frequency, and carbon emissions across the UK population. The central finding is the piece’s governing fact: just under 3 percent of all trips are responsible for around 60 percent of miles traveled and 70 percent of all passenger travel-related carbon emissions. The researchers’ conclusion was direct — the most effective strategy, both at the policy and personal level, is to prioritize the relatively fewer longer-distance trips, especially flights.

This is not a slow travel conclusion. It is a low-frequency conclusion. The research supports fewer long-haul trips taken less often — whether those trips are made slowly or not. A traveler who replaces one transatlantic flight with a slow journey across Europe by train has reduced their footprint meaningfully. A traveler who makes five slow European trips by train in the time they would have made two transatlantic return flights has not necessarily reduced their footprint at all. They have reduced their cruising altitude. The climate counts neither.

International journeys are 0.4 percent of total trips by UK residents but are responsible for 55 percent of all passenger travel emissions. Slow travel by train within Europe, however consistent and principled, does not touch that 55 percent unless it is replacing long-haul flights rather than supplementing them. The climate counts the kilometers. It does not count the philosophy that accompanied them.

LOWER INTENSITY IS NOT LOWER IMPACT

The deeper behavioral insight — the one the slow travel movement has been reluctant to address — is that people consistently confuse lower-intensity travel with lower-impact travel. Slow travel feels lighter. The train compartment, the ferry crossing, the narrowboat week — these experiences carry less of the anxiety of speed, the carbon guilt of the boarding gate, the sense of having consumed something in the act of arriving. They feel more proportionate to the distance covered.

The feeling is accurate about intensity. It is not always accurate about impact. A traveler who moves slowly and continuously for three months may produce more emissions than one who travels fast and seldom. The slow traveler’s emissions are distributed across many gentler moments. The fast traveler’s emissions are concentrated in a smaller number of high-impact ones. Carbon accounting does not reward the distribution. It counts the total.

This does not mean slow travel is without value. Traveling slowly produces a deeper relationship with the places visited, reduces the psychological cost of constant transit, and — when it genuinely substitutes for long-haul flights — reduces emissions significantly. The slow travel case is strongest when it is a substitution argument: instead of flying to Thailand for two weeks, take a slow trip across France and Italy for three. That is a meaningful reduction. It is also a different kind of holiday, made more possible by the freedom of a longer stay. The experience argument and the carbon argument, in this version, align.

Where they diverge is when slow travel is added to an existing travel pattern rather than substituted into it — when it becomes an additional form of travel consumption rather than a replacement for a more carbon-intensive one. The climate does not distinguish between slow kilometers and fast ones. It counts them both.

Good travel begins with curiosity. Responsible travel begins with arithmetic.
